Family Memories

If you know me well, then you know that I love Mary Engelbreit and anything that has to do with her cherry drawings and saying "Life is just a chair of bowlies."

Growing up, we frequently visited my grandmother's cousins, Rhoda Lee and Nathan. They were so sweet to us and we loved going to see them. I don't know why, but they never had children of their own, so between my grandmother, my mom and dad, my aunts and Rhoda's nephew, the task of looking after them was shared.

My senior year of high school, I went every Friday to check on them. Neither one of them could get around very well and Rhoda needed help washing her hair and sometimes she would make me give her a hair cut. I hated that, because my Aunt Jimmie was the one that would usually cut her hair, but Rhoda didn't want to wait or bother Jimmie to help her.

During our visits, we would talk about all kinds of things and Rhoda always told me that life was a bowl of cherries. That is what hooked me on loving ME's cherry drawings.

I miss Rhoda and Nathan so much and they have both been gone for quite some time. For many years after Rhoda Lee passed, I found myself thinking that I needed to call and check on her. The heart sinking feeling never truly goes away and I will always be thankful for what the love they showed to us.
